Our family moved to Singapore after our son graduated from kindergarten, and he enrolled at KBH in May 2023. In Japan, our son had lived a life completely unrelated to English. He started attending an English conversation school about three months before moving to Singapore, but when we arrived, he was still almost unable to speak English.
When choosing a school, our priorities were: a small school with small class sizes and a warm, welcoming atmosphere; English support classes; and affordable tuition without excessive financial burden. However, since the holiday period was approaching, there were only a limited number of schools that could accept a beginner-level English learner like our son right away.
When we visited KBH, the teacher who spoke with us was incredibly kind and supportive. Also, after attending a trial class, our son said, “It was fun, so I want to go to this school.” That helped us decide to enroll him at KBH.
At the beginning, his Japanese classmates supported him a lot. Thanks to them, he was able to adapt to the unfamiliar school environment quickly.
Soon after enrollment, the end-of-year holiday began, so he joined the school’s holiday camp. This was the first time he was in an environment where he was the only Japanese student, and we were a little worried. However, he enjoyed going every day.
A few months after enrollment, there were times when he felt stressed because he couldn’t express what he wanted to say in English. But with encouragement from the teachers and by making new friends in his class, he gradually became more settled.
He attended PLP (English supplementary classes) almost every day, leaving his regular classes to participate.
In one-on-one lessons with his assigned teacher, he began by learning the basics of English, such as how to write the alphabet and phonics. As he gradually became more comfortable with English, he transitioned to small-group lessons.
There were PLP progress meetings several times a year, where we were able to hear updates on his development.
The teacher in charge of PLP paid close attention to each student and tailored instruction to each child’s level. Through effective teaching methods, his English steadily improved, and even we as parents were amazed at how quickly his English skills developed.
After about six months, our son completed PLP and reached a level where he could understand regular classroom lessons.
He has made friends across different classes and grade levels, and he goes to school happily every day. In addition to studying, he also seems to enjoy the various events throughout the year—experiences he had never had in Japan.
Since enrolling, we have been filled with gratitude toward the Japanese classmates who supported him, his friends, his homeroom teachers, and the PLP teachers.
We hope our son will continue to enjoy his school life at KBH and spend many precious, irreplaceable moments there.
